A Solution to Our Towel Bar Problem

I'm back in my little guys bath trying to pull things together as it is still a work in progress. I needed a towel bar that could hold up to rough and tough tugging little hands. We have a wall along side the tub that seemed to be the perfect spot, until we discovered the placement of the studs. From experience, I do not put a whole lot of trust into the plastic wall anchors for items that will be yanked and pulled daily. This quick little solution works perfectly, plus it added a little shelf for more decor!
We began with 1/2 inch thick select pine boards. The width of your boards will determine the width of your shelf {we used 4 inch} and the length can be as long as you need. Our boards came in 24 inch lengths which fit perfectly on the wall so we did not even need to cut them. The 1/2 X 4 X 24 Pine Boards costs only $2.20 each and we picked up two at our local hardware store for this project.

After the preferred height was determined, one of the boards was screwed directly into the studs using 3 1/2 inch screws. Holes for the screws were pre-drilled to ensure the wood would not split and the screws heads were counter sunk so you would not be able to see them once finished.

Once the board was in place the towel ring brackets were attached, evenly measured and spaced out. I like the look of towel rings and wanted to use three of them; however this could also be used for a towel bar or plain hooks with the same effect. Wood putty was used to fill in any screw holes and sanded for a nice smooth finish.

A bead of Gorilla Wood Glue was placed on the top ledge of the first board, then the second board was placed on top and nailed in with a nail gun. I can not say enough about the strength of the Gorilla Glue brand, especially the wood glue; it is the best that I {and my hubby} have used.

With the top board nailed in place, it was ready for finishing. For a clean look a bead of paintable caulking was placed where the top board meets the wall. This was left overnight to dry, then painters tape was used and a fresh coat of bright white was applied to match the rooms trim work.

Once the paint was dry, the towel rings were put in place...

...and our problem solved!

It is not the fanciest shelf but it works perfectly in the space and our little guy can practically hang from the rings without it budging one bit.

Plus I have a neat little space that I get to accessorize! {Which I'll leave that for the final reveal}

I'll be back tomorrow with another 'buggy' project for this space. Enjoy!

I LOVE IT! great solution indeed. BUT ~ did you say little 'guy'??? My kids always had grime the would dirty up WHITE towels in a heartbeat. lol

Really cute! I like the rings you picked!

what an awesome idea...we have the same problem...maybe I'll try this out

That even looks cuter that just the rings by themselves. Love it. I would have had to use hooks though. The rings would just take way to long for the kids to hang them.

What a great idea! I hate searching for studs and finding they are all in the wrong places.

This looks so nice. I did something similar, but with hooks. They are easy for the kids to use and they look neat too. You should contact me and let me monogram those towels for you. :) Lisa~

hi Stephanie Lynn-
It may not be fancy, but I love it and the fact that you anchored it to the wall so it stays up. It is perfect for a kids bath where the towels seem to never make it back on to the towel rack. You made the towel bar so good looking and simple for him to use, you may never see a towel on the floor as he grows up :)

Very cute. I want to see how white those towels stay, though. :)

What a great idea! I have a similar situation with a towel bar that has been ripped out of the plaster more times than I can count. I may have to borrow this idea!

SO CUTE! I love it -- and love it's practicality! Boys just don't know their own strength!!

It's perfect and the fact that you got a display shelf out of it, too, is great! I like the way you hung it, built it and painted it as you went. I probably would have tried to make the whole thing first and then hang it afterward. =)

Stephanie...that is a fantastic idea! As the mom of 5 children, 4 of whom throw their towels anywhere. We have a 6 prong towel holder in the bath right now but doesnt work...I always find them on the floor. I appreciate you sharing this great project and with be using it very soon in the kids bathroom. - thanks Melanie

I love this and we don't even have littles that will hang from it as we are an empty nest now! We have a towel bar in our tub area that no matter what kind of great anchors we try the bar pulls out of the wall. I'm going to mark this post so that when summer slows down we can try something like this.

i thought i was blown away by finally finding an idea i LOVE for our akward kitchen wall, and now as i read through older posts i find the PERFECT solution for a towel bar in my toddler's "soon to be made over" bathroom??? goodnees gracious lady you're blowing me away here! :) thanks so much for the wonderful ideas!

Though not particularly humorous, this post made me laugh out loud. Just this morning we were discussing the possible replacements for our traditional bathroom towel bar that is not longer. Someone thought it would be wonderful for pull ups. Bless the creativity of children :)

This is a great solution and it looks fantastic. Thanks for the idea.

Very cool!!! I love how it turned out---we need another place for towels in our bath, and there's not much room for a purchased towel bar, but I think this might work really well because we can make it any length we need! Thanks for sharing!
