Do it Yourself Drawer Organizers {DIY Kitchen Organization}

Do it Yourself Drawer Organizers {DIY Kitchen Organization}

I have two drawers in my kitchen that drive me crazy; the two that hold all the larger utensils and cooking gadgets. I have yet to find an organizer large enough to keep spatulas, spoons, and can openers in line. A trip to the hardware store, a couple pieces of wood and some amazing glue… and you can say hello to organized bliss.

Each divider was made with 1/4 inch {thick} Poplar Boards. Poplar is a versatile wood that is easy to work with and glue plus its ideal for cabinetry and furniture. I used 3 inch {width} boards as they were the perfect size when turned vertical to fit inside the drawers. Poplar boards can be found at your local hardware store and run approximately $1.50 for a 1/4 X 3 X 2.
Measure the width of the inside of the drawer and cut your board accordingly. I used a chop saw however these can easily be cut with a hand saw as well.
Sand the cut edges for a smooth finish. The palm-sized rubber grip on the Norton Sanding Bug by Rockler makes hand sanding a breeze.
Insert the board into the drawer and align so that it is straight.
Run a bead of Gorilla Wood Glue along the front and back of each seam. Gently run your fingertip over the glue, removing any excess, and filling in any gaps. The glue dries a natural color so you will not even be able to see the glue line when dry.

Let sit to dry for 24 hours. Everything is held into place simply with the Gorilla Wood Glue, that’s it ~ nothing else. The bond of this glue is simply incredible and unmatched in my opinion. {My organizers have been in for about a month now and not one board even has a slight wiggle}

The first drawer has three large horizontal compartments…
and the second drawer has one large vertical {for my rolling pins} and three horizontal compartments.
This same application can be used in pretty much any drawer bringing you endless organized happiness. {love} I definitely will be doing more of these in my kitchen…I thinking even in the bath vanity too!
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! I’ll be back in a couple of hours with the Sunday Showcase Party. I can’t wait to see what you’ve been working on this week. Enjoy!

  1. We did this same idea with pieces of poplar in our drawer for not only the big utensils but the fork/knife/spoons as well. It works out beautifully.

  2. Great idea and it doesn’t look hard at all. Thanks for the inspiration! Love & blessings from NC!

  3. Great idea! I have several drawers that I want to try this on.

  4. Wow! That is awesome. It is such a custom look! Thank you SO much for sharing this idea!

  5. Stephanie,

    I’m so glad you posted this! Just yesterday I was trying to figure out how I could create drawer organizers for cheap. Great tip. I’m doing this for sure!

  6. Wow, I would of never thought of this and lived with my drawers a mess. This is a great idea! I just was at the Container store and they had plastic inserts you could use, and I found them unattractive. I like your idea better. Thanks for sharing.

  7. I have two drawers that drive me to distraction, this is the perfect custom look!!! Adding this to my to do list!

  8. What a great way to customize your drawers- I love anything organization related!

  9. That is SO COOL! I’m going to do this when we install new cabinets/drawers soon. Thanks once again, Stephanie, for the great idea!

  10. LOVE that idea!! My drawers definitely need it. And I think it would be awesome for bathroom drawers too!

  11. Um…can I have your brain for a day so I can absorb some of your creativity…seriously, just a day. 😉

  12. to make it a little less permanent, you could put add more boards on the edges and glue your dividers to those…does that make sense? It’s been a long day. One example would be like a Capital I. 🙂

    • Just what I was thinking myself. It would make cleanup easier in case of messy spills, etc.–you could take it out and run the faucet or sprayer over all those little corners instead of trying to get at them inside the drawer with the dishcloth.

  13. Oh, man, I can SO use this idea! Thanks, S.L.!

  14. Oooh, I love this! Thanks for sharing!! I posted a link:

  15. Wonderful! This is now on my project list for next weekend!

  16. Clever! Love this project!

  17. LOVE….LOVE….LOVE….LOVE…. 1,000 times over….LOVE!! I am absolutely going to do this. I am constantly looking for ways to organize better, but store bought things are never a PERFECT fit. I would really like to make them fit exactly as I’d like. Great idea Stephanie Lynn!

  18. Fabulous! I’m definitely going to try doing a few for my drawers, too! (Also, this is definitely one those “why didn’t I think of this?” ideas!)

  19. You read my mind! I was just thinking the other day that I needed a better way to organize our “junk” drawer — and this would be perfect! What a wonderful idea — and a great tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂

  20. thank you for sharing – my husband will be so happy to see our drawer organized!

  21. i am so doing this!!! love it!

  22. This is such an ingenious idea! I’ll have to add it to my husband’s honey-do list. I featured it here. So clever!

  23. You always have the best ideas. BTW I love your blog. Thanks for linking to We’re Organized Wednesday.

  24. Freakin’ brilliant!

  25. Stephanie Lynn…I love this idea. I must do this. I have been also wanting to install roll outs in my lowers cabinets for a while now. I have to just take the plunge. I will for sure be doing this! I already have the glue I just need the boards!

  26. I Love this idea! It seems you can hardly find organizers to fit the space you need. And you get to totally customize the drawers and… it looks good. I’m all about functional, while at the same time looking good! Great post!

  27. I have been searching for something to fit my drawers – and finally lose that tangled up, unorganized mess in 3 of my drawers in the kitchen. I can’t wait to see my ‘gadget’ drawers organized and neat! I am going to get the supplies now… This will be a less expensive fix than all the ill-fitting organizers I’ve bought (and returned) over the years. THANKS!

  28. OK, this is GREAT! I did my drawers like that some time ago and didn’t use the glue, so I had problems just wedging them into place. Now I’m going to redo them and do more…much more. I’m excited!!!

  29. and I’m your newest follower. I’m working on my drawers today.

  30. Great idea. I have a couple of drawers that could use this makeover.

  31. Great idea! I saw these boards at HD about a month ago, cheap & sturdy! I’m going to make some of these, but use additionalboards for the sides instead of gluing directly to the drawers. This way, it’s easy to remove & replace if I want to change the configuration. Thanks for the inspiration!

  32. This is a great tutorial. I am going to try this with my dresser drawer and felt lining for jewelry storage! Thanks for the great idea!

  33. Great idea! Just a suggestion if you don’t want the dividers to be permanent – cut a very thin piece of board to fit into your drawer, then glue the divider pieces just to the board, not the drawer.

  34. I Really like this idea! It seems you can hardly discover coordinators to fit the area you need. And you get to completely change the storage and… it looks excellent. I’m all about productive, while as well looking good! Excellent post!

  35. That is sooo awesome! Gonna have to get my hubby to help get that done in my kitchen – I can’t stand the messy drawers!

  36. Thanks! Going to do this for my sock drawer!

  37. Stephanie Freeman :

    I have been looking for this idea as well! And I am a Stephanie Lynn, too. Great coincidence!

  38. What a great idea. Can’t wait to try this.

  39. Super idea, I’m going to try this. Twenty years of trying different sized organizers and none have been perfect….hope this will.

    Wow! That is so smart, I wish I would have seen this before I went a bought some plastic stuff on IKEA. Its so much more personal when you make something yourself with your heart and soul.
