Styling a Party

I love throwing parties because I love the planning, decorating, and the creativity. For me, parties are more than just having people over for food and drinks. I want my guests to leave with having the best time and seeing things that they haven’t seen before at other parties! It starts with selecting a theme and carrying it out through your decor. A party does not have to have a theme but having one gives you a set plan for the party. It helps you with decor, menu selection and entertainment.

A theme can just be colors. I like to stick to 2 to 3 base colors for any party. It gives your party the WOW factor. Think outside the box. It does not require a ton of money but will require some time! Use your crafty skills or enlist friends and family who are crafty and can help you. The more time you have to prepare for the party the better. Look at your own resources. Do you already own things that you can use for your theme? Do your friends or family have things that you can borrow that will work for your theme?

This Thing 1 & 2 party cost me a total of $213 for the birthday twins and 12 kids. The cost included everything from styling, food, drinks, favors and games. To learn all of the things I did click here.

Start with your party plan. Get your muses from the Internet. I am always blown away how creative people truly are. I find things I like and create a file. Another one of my favorite ways to find muses for styling is to look at store windows and magazines. They are amazing source of inspiration!

My favorite go to places for party decor are thrift stores and Dollar stores. You will be amazed how many things you will find. If it isn’t the right color no worries…nothing a can of spray paint can’t fix!

I found children cowboy boots at Goodwill for $2.99 but they were pink. After 2 coats of red spray paint, they were a perfect centerpiece for my daughter’s Cowboy Theme Toy Story Party.

Most of my personal parties are one time events. So after I style a party, I will sell the party decor as a lot on Craigslist or Ebay. Display pictures from the party- it will sell! You can get either all your money back or at least most of it.

I know that dessert tables are all the rage but styling a party is not just a dessert table. It encompasses the whole area where the party will be. Little details make all the difference.

I even like to make sure the bathroom goes with the theme. Okay, maybe that is too much.

My biggest secret of styling is truly picking your theme/colors early and having a plan. I keep a journal with all of my upcoming parties and sketches and lists of what I would like. I am a HUGE believer in hitting all of the after holiday sales. You can find things from 50 -90% off! I am the girl after each holiday (armed with my journal) on the floor reaching in the back of the bottom shelves to see what I can find to work with my themes. I have no shame!
