Half Dozen Decorative Christmas Eggs featuring Tonia from The Gunny Sack {Handmade Holidays Project No.6}

Welcome back to the continuation of the Handmade Holiday Series featuring STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam. This week we are sharing a total of twenty five inspiring projects to create for the upcoming holiday season.

I’m excited to introduce our next guest,
Tonia from The Gunny Sack

Tonia’s Half Dozen Christmas Eggs are packed with colors, textures, and a little sparkle to add to your holiday decor. Please welcome Tonia.

Hi, I’m Tonia from The Gunny Sack. Thank you for having me as a guest today, Stephanie Lynn! I was a huge fan of Under The Table & Dreaming even before I started blogging. So, I am so excited to be part of the Handmade Holidays series! I am going to show you how to make Half Dozen Christmas Eggs.

My favorite Half Dozen Christmas Eggs are the natural ones. To make these eggs, I found items from outdoors to cover the eggs.

Supplies:

  • six 2 ¼ x 1 ⅞ inch hen eggs of STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam
  • various dried seeds, leaves and petals
  • craft paint
  • paint brushes
  • hot glue gun
  • toothpicks
  • 1/2 egg carton
  • straw

First paint the egg a color that matches whatever you will be covering it with. Stick a toothpick in the bottom of the egg and then stick the toothpick into something else to hold the egg up while drying. I painted this egg tan. Allow the paint to dry before moving onto the next step. To cover the tan egg, I found this feathery stalk and pulled the wispy seeds off. Then, I covered small areas of the egg with hot glue and sprinkled the wispy seeds on top and gently pressed them into the glue.

For the brown egg, I followed the same steps but this time I painted the egg brown and covered it with dried leaves and seeds from this brown plant. When all of the eggs are covered, cut an egg carton in half and put straw in the bottom. Gently place the covered eggs of STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam in the carton. The eggs can be left in the carton for display or a loop can be added to each egg so it can be hung for display.

The next bunch of Half Dozen Christmas Eggs are these sparkle eggs. You can customize the colors depending on the decor you are trying to match. I love blue and silver at Christmas.

Supplies:

  • six 2 ¼ x 1 ⅞ inch hen eggs of STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam
  • glitter craft paint
  • paint brushes
  • toothpicks
  • 1/2 egg carton
  • tinsel

Insert a toothpick into each egg and paint them in various ways with the glitter craft paint. I did 2 plain, 2 polka dot and 2 striped eggs. Allow the first coat of paint to dry and then add another coat. Once dry, cover the bottom of half an egg carton with tinsel and place the sparkle eggs on top.

The third kind of Half Dozen Christmas Eggs I made are in the traditional red, green and white.

Supplies:

  • six 2 ¼ x 1 ⅞ inch hen eggs of STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam
  • red & green tissue paper
  • snow paint
  • paint brushes
  • craft glue
  • 1/2 egg carton
  • artificial snow blanket

I covered 2 of the eggs with snow paint and put them aside to dry. Then, for the red and green eggs, I covered a small area of the egg with craft glue and put a piece of crumpled tissue paper in the glue. I put pieces of an artificial snow blanket in the bottom of half an egg carton and placed the covered eggs on the top.

These eggs were so fun to make and I can’t wait to give them as Christmas gifts! I like that there are so many different ways they can be covered. I want to try covering them with Christmas fabric, ribbons or tiny beads too! Thanks again, Stephanie Lynn, for having me as a guest today and I hope to see you all at The Gunny Sack!

Thanks so much Tonia for sharing your decorative eggs. I think these would be so fun to use a fillers, which not only could be use for the holidays, but year round as well. There are so many possibilities.
I’ll be back shortly with another project to inspire your handmade holiday this year. Enjoy.
