Our Outdoor Storage Shed Progress + The Bagster® Bag: $100 American Express Gift Card Giveaway

Our Outdoor Storage Shed Progress + The Bagster® Bag: $100 American Express Gift Card Giveaway

Hello friends. Hope everyone is doing fine and well.. and ready for the holidays.
The past couple of weeks we have overloaded our work schedule just a bit
trying to get the outdoor storage shed project finished up.
The weather has turned much colder and the days are significantly shorter
– neither of which really helps with any outside projects this time of year.
We did make some amazing progress though on the shed’s to-do list and for the most part
it is all ready and prepared for the next couple of wintery months ahead.

Butch began building the shed at the beginning of the year and it sat in the above condition for a majority of the summer. The project was put back on the charts a couple months ago thanks to an email from Waste Management offering us one of The Bagster Bags.

If you missed the first post {here}- The Bagster bag can be purchased at more than 2,000 local home improvement and hardware stores for around $30. You can use it for as long as you need it, then when you are ready to have it picked up you just call or schedule the collection online.
The pick up costs vary from area to area; In our area it’s $154 for the first load.

We found it to be a sensible, responsible solution for do-it-yourself home improvement projects
were a good amount of debris, waste, and unwanted unrecyclable junk is inevitable.

The fair amount of excess building materials and yard waste left over from the just the build alone would have costs us at least a few visits back and forth to our local landfill
– which is over an hour and a half away.
The Bagster Bag was not only convenient, but an affordable solution for this project.

The first thing crossed off the to-do was a set of doors. We first thought of purchasing a garage door of some sort and even tossed around a sliding barn door; however with the interior walls and slanted roof  there simply was not enough space – since the doors were so wide.

Ultimately, Butch ended up building a set of swinging doors from scratch.
Once the doors weather up they will match the rest of the wood trim perfectly.

The second thing taken off the list was the lean-to extension off the main shed.

We have learned that we simply can not have enough extra space.

The three sided extension provides the perfect covered housing for all the
yard carts, wagons, and other large items
that do not necessarily need to be stored inside.
My favorite part of this whole project was this potting bench my husband made for me.
I really thought this would be carried over to next spring but he surprised me
– even in this frigid weather.

The bench was constructed from a couple of old pallets we had laying around and left over 2X4’s.

The final touches to this little area will be added once spring arrives.

I’m not going to lie – I was thrilled to finally organize the terra cotta pots
and just put them up on the shelf – on display.

Butch was on a roll as he even put together this solar light for the front.

Since we have yet to run electrical power to the shed – solar power was all he had to work with.
He started with an industrial type IKEA light fixture and an inexpensive
solar light kit from the hardware store  – combined with a junction box and some bent conduit.

The wired solar panel is placed on the roof and provides just enough light at night
to illuminate the ramp, doors, and lock.

While we did get a chance to go through a majority of outdoor power tools, yard maintenance equipment and other ‘recreational’ toys that go in this space
— we still have some work to do come spring.
For now we stacked the ‘for keeps’ on some shelving
though plan another full organizing gig
once the warmer weather comes around again.

Which works out wonderfully as once you purchase the $30 Bagster bag
you can keep it as long as you like
– then just schedule the pick up when you are ready to see it go.
See our pile back there waiting for warmer weather … I am sure by spring it will double in size.

Keep in mind, The Bagster bag encourages customers to reduce landfill waste
by donating or recycling items and materials when at all possible.

  62. I am a fan of Under The Table Dreaming on FB. I don’t understand Twitter, so I am not on it.Sad face 🙁

  63. That is an incredible shed. Love the design and usefulness. I haven’t been following so don’t know how long it took to get your shed done. Much hard work well worth it huh? That bag is awesome, have seen them advertised on tv but didn’t know if they were really good. Looks like it. What a great way to keep the trash out of sight til you’re ready to get rid of it. Smart folks you are.
We have a shed but it’s full of our “stuff”. Altho we went thru everything in spring/early summer we still have a shed full of stuff. We took so much to the thrift store to donate after our yard sale. We maybe made $40 at yard sale but the rest went to the thrift store about 6 miles away in small town.
It was weird to go to thrift store and come across so much of what we’d donated. I started to buy a couple things til I realized we’d donated them, duh.
We have a shed that started out as one of those pipe and canvas deals. The wind demolished another one we had so decided to close this one in. Hubs had gotten alot of strand board pieces where he worked so used them to close it in. Bought the roofing and we had it closed in. Hubs made a door. Shed is up on pallets for the floor hubs had gotten at work also. It’s hung in there thru a few CO winters and alot of wind storms.
Would love to have a great shed like yours but at least we have one.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

  64. My goals for 2013 are many. Among those is to volunteer and offer more of myself to those in need.

  65. great shed! my goal for spring of 2013 is to have some raised garden beds so i can return to growing some of my own vegetables.

  66. My goal for 2013 is to give away all our belongings and retire to Ecuador. Our 2013 resolutions are,, our stuff does not define us, we are so much more than our possessions. Our memories are not under our bed, they are in us. Any item that is sentimental to us can be useful to someone else. We will take electronic pics of items we really want to remember, and will get a terabyte storage to keep them on. It is hard, but we know that holding on to stuff weighs on us mentally and emotionally and we are letting go to start a new adventure.
    Wish us luck.

  67. goal for 2013 is to upcycle, recycle and pass it all on to anyone who might need things.

  80. So envious of your shed, your hubby has done a wonderful job. My goal for 2013 is to retire and work on my flower garden and hopefully get it to look like I have dreamed for many years. I’ll be a regular at my local big box store. Those bagsters are great, I could fill one up right now!
